Free Blacks compared to Slaves :: History
Free Blacks compared to Slaves The next few paragraphs will compare blacks in the north to blacks in the south in the 1800ââ¬â¢s. In either location blacks were thought of as incompetent and inferior. The next few paragraphs will explain each groupââ¬â¢s lifestyle and manner of living. Up north all blacks were free. The population of blacks in the north was about 1% in 1860 after the American Revolution. The blacks up north had minimal rights. The blacks could not vote, because of stipulations or they were just told that they could not vote by laws of their area. The New York Convention created one stipulation that was created to exclude blacks from voting in 1821; the law stated that blacks could not vote if they did not own property. Most blacks were having a tough time getting jobs in the south. So if a black person could not generate income how were they supposed to buy a home? In the north the blacks only had menial jobs. Menial jobs were basically jobs that you needed no skill and received small pay. Jobs of skill were kept away from blacks. If blacks tried to get the skill jobs they were either turned away or beat up by workers. About 95% of blacks in the 1800ââ¬â¢s were working menial jobs. The jobs that the blacks acquired were the jobs that whites would not take. Whites just thought of blacks as dumb and incapable people, they were only capable for menial jobs. Blacks in the north were separated from their white counterparts in everyway. Legislators were always creating laws to keep the races divided. Many states tried to impose laws that would segregate schools. The whites did not want black kids going to the same school because if blacks and whites mingled there could be inter marriage. Even the trains were segregated. Negroes had to sit on a certain part of the streetcars and whites on another. Blacks were not allowed to go to certain cities because people thought that they brought down the property value. Imagine people thought just the presence of blacks could bring down property value down. Blacks in the south were not free. Southern blacks were forced to work all day for no pay. As soon as the sunrise the slaves had to work until sunset. Blacks in the south had no choice to take a day off or not.

One Good Beating :: English Literature
One Good Beating Many contemporary Scottish plays explore the conflict that can exist between people of different generations. In this essay I am going to discuss whether or not Linda McLeanââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"One Good Beatingâ⬠conveys this issue of conflict and explore the other themes throughout the play. Although ââ¬Å"One Good Beatingâ⬠only consists of three characters (Robert-dad, Elaine- daughter and Stephen-son) there are many conflicts throughout the play, many of which are between all three characters over the same issue. Stephen is in conflict with his dad Robert because when he was younger he used to beat him. Stephen is still affected by his traumatising childhood even though he is in his mid thirties. Stephen: ââ¬Å"But he never hit youâ⬠Elaine: ââ¬Å"If he thinks for a minute youââ¬â¢re stuck in the past heââ¬â¢ll Beat youâ⬠These words illustrate how Stephen has been emotionally scarred by what his father did to him and canââ¬â¢t live his life properly because he is living with the memory of his tragic childhood. This conflict, which has grown between these two characters, does not just go in the one direction, Robert is in conflict with Stephen but for an entirely different reason. Robert never loved Stephen however Stephen continued trying to change his fatherââ¬â¢s opinion. The only way Robert could react to this was to hit Stephen. Robert: ââ¬Å"I couldnââ¬â¢t give a tuppenny damn whether you forgave me or notâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Stephen: ââ¬Å"all I wanted from himâ⬠¦I wanted him to love meâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Robert: ââ¬Å" â⬠¦I donââ¬â¢t like youâ⬠Robertââ¬â¢s only problem with his son was that he had been born. However he didnââ¬â¢t love Stephen because he could not love any one. It was just simply because he did not like him. Robert: ââ¬Å"its temporary, Elaine knows I love her.â⬠These words emphasise even more that it was just his son he had a problem with and that he was devoted to his daughter. Stephen is not the only one in conflict with Robert. Elaine is also in conflict with Robert because when she was young, Robert killed her puppy. Robert: ââ¬Å" â⬠¦ dead something. Puppy maybe.â⬠Elaine reacts to this by (stage directions) hitting the coal-shed door, which demonstrates that she has never forgiven her father for what he did and still feels strongly about the issue. She is also in conflict with her father because he hit her mother and brother and buried their mother without even informing them of her death. Elaine: ââ¬Å" you didnââ¬â¢t even give her a proper funeralâ⬠Elaine: ââ¬Å" you never told anybody she was deadâ⬠This emphasises how she felt about her mother and how much hate she has for her father because of how he mistreated her mother.
New Jersey corrections officer
Paul Leaders has been a New Jersey Department of Corrections Officer (NJDCO) for over ten years.à As a NJDCO, Paulââ¬â¢s role and responsibility is to ââ¬Å"ensure the custody, safety and care of criminal offenders confined in state correctional facilitiesâ⬠(www.state.nj.us/corrections).à à It is his duty to ââ¬Å"ensure the safety and welfare of the staff and inmate population, assist in the rehabilitative efforts for those incarcerated individuals returning to the community and promote public support for the operation and objectives of the Department of Correctionsâ⬠(www.state.nj.us/corrections). At the age of 25, Paul began his career with the Department of Corrections.à Before he became a full-fledge corrections office, he had to go through a screening process.à The pre-employment screening is a four phase process that includes filling out an application, taking a video test, completing a computer background assessment, a general and intensive background check, a drug test, a written psych exam, a medical exam and a psych interview.à If an interviewee gets through the screening successfully, next comes a 14 week training course at the academy and then an on the job test period (www.state.nj.us/corrections).à The pre-employment screening is vigorous to discourage those who are not serious about making the Department of Corrections their career of choice. Once Paul successfully completed his screening, his on the job test period began in a youth facility.à His eyes were opened to the harsh realities of his position when he was attacked by a 15 year-old inmate. Although, he was not seriously hurt, his perspective changed. Paul realized that to do his job to the best of his ability and to protect himself and his co-workers, he had to treat all inmates as dangerous, no matter what their age.à Throughout the years, the dangers associated with his career choice were clearly seen.à NJDOCââ¬â¢s are often put in a variety of sticky situations. The ratio of officers to inmates is 1 to 3 (www.njpp.org/rpt_moneyfornothing).à Since they are out-numbered, a NJDOCââ¬â¢s goal is to stop potentially harmful situations before they happen.à Paul learned many valuable techniques in his psychology classes during his 14-week training process. (www.state.nj.us/corrections).à It is so much easier to prevent situations from happening than to try to de-escalate a situation once it has started. Paul has found the most challenging aspect of being a NJDCO is the personal standard necessary.à An NJDCO must have a higher set of standards when the bars clang shut.à A daily part of the job includes being taunted, called out of your name, and possibly attacked.à Through all this, a NJDCO cannot retaliate.à It is not the correction officerââ¬â¢s place to get angry or respond in kind.à They must turn away when an inmate is purposely trying to rile them.à If an officer hurts an inmate or is caught abusing their authority, they will be fired.à The duty of a NJDCO is to uphold the laws of the penal code and treat inmates with respect. NJDCOsââ¬â¢ spend time at lease forty hours a week with inmates.à Officers get to know the inmates extremely well and see facets of the human psyche many people are unaware of.à ââ¬Å"40% of NJDOC offenders were convicted of a violent offense such as homicide, sexual assault, aggravated or simple assault, robbery, kidnapping and other personal offenses (terrorist threats, coercion, larceny from a person, death by auto and negligent manslaughter)â⬠(www.state.nj.us/corrections). Dealing with inmates intimately is no walk in the park.à Officer relationships with inmates have gone from one extreme to another.à Some officers have been charged with bringing inmates contraband and others have been charged with assault on an inmate.à The key to survival is finding the balance ââ¬â living in the middle is an NJDCO officerââ¬â¢s way. The department of corrections has a code of ethics that must be adhered to if an officer is to last on the job.à It is necessary to hold in confidence all information gained on the job, no gifts or services can be accepted from inmates or family members and no personal or financial gain is to be made that is in conflict with duties or will impair objectivity or judgment (www.state.nj.us/corrections).à To sum it up, be honest and do your job.à Unfortunately, for some, thatââ¬â¢s easier said than done. The Department of Corrections has a Hearing Appeals Section and an Administrative Law/Civil Employment Litigation Section that handles employee discipline/grievances and resolves cases against employees (www.state.nj.us/corrections).à Whenever a corrections officer is facing an ethical issue, representation is provided so that the officerââ¬â¢s rights are not violated. Of course, there are specific laws correction officers must obey and if they knowingly exceed the extent of their power then they can face a judge and possibly go to jail.à The added stress of the job decreases the correction officerââ¬â¢s life span to 59 years (www.jrank.org).à Therefore, it is necessary to have your guard up continuously if you want to make wise choices, get through the workday with your personal honor intact and live longer than what some researchers have predicted. The stress of the job has caused Paul to think thought about moving into a different area of law enforcement but this might require more training and schooling.à As a corrections officer, his high school diploma was all he needed, along with being a US citizen, having a valid New Jersey driverââ¬â¢s license, speaking English well and being able to handle the job physically and psychologically.à Although he took extra courses during training, he does not believe that will be enough for a transfer to a different department.à Paul has not investigated the move and after an especially hard day with the inmates, he promises himself that he will. Prolonged contact with inmates is the main difference between NJDCO positions and other law enforcement positions.à Policemen and detectives, for example, investigate crimes and track criminals.à They may have to face the individuals in court, but once they are locked up, their contact with the criminal is over.à A NJDCOââ¬â¢s contact with the criminal begins after the other law enforcement officersââ¬â¢ contact has ended and that contact lasts as long as the inmatesââ¬â¢ sentence. For the first few years of his career, Paul found fulfillment on his job.à He is serving his state, providing a needed assistance, protecting the residents of New Jersey and helping his fellow officers.à Now, he canââ¬â¢t say that.à The stress of not knowing what will happen from day to day is extremely hard and the last few years have been a struggle.à The constant hassle of the job has become overwhelming and is causing a strain on his marriage of 2 years.à The fact that he cannot express why he dissatisfied and he does not want to talk about the job increases to the coupleââ¬â¢s frustration. Add the fact that he cannot talk about confidential information and the situation gets dangerous.à Communication between Paul and his wife has gone from bad to worse.à Because they are planning to have children, Paul recently transferred from the youth facility to a minimum security prison.à They are hoping this change will decrease his stress and ease the strain in their relationship.à Paul believes the transfer will make a big difference in his attitude and stress level, increasing his job satisfaction. In New Jersey, the Department of Corrections is made up of minimum, medium and maximum-security prisons.à With 14 major institutions, including 8 male prisons, 3 youth facilities, 1 female prison, and one prison for sex offenders, there were plenty of facilities for Paul to choose from.à Moving to a maximum-security prison would have meant an increase in pay but for Paul, added money would have brought added stress.à This wasnââ¬â¢t the case when Paulââ¬â¢s career began but today, the salary for a corrections officer is $43,000.à The max amount for a senior corrections officer is $65,000, achieved in nine step increments (www.state.nj.us/corrections). There are over ten different promotions available to senior corrections officers, which include, Central Transportation, Correction Staff Training Academy, Critical Incident Negotiation Teams, Custody Recruitment Unit and SRP Boot Camp.à These are just some of the positions available to Senior Correction Officers (www.state.nj.us/corrections).à Although, all officers go through rigorous training that includes coursework, most officers who move into higher positions have additional schooling.à If things go well in his new position, Paul believes that one day, he may be ready to interview for one of the promotional positions. Paul believes the key to a successful career in the Department of Corrections is to walk on the job daily with a mindset of integrity and tactfulness mixed with firmness.à Inmates are people, just like you, no matter what theyââ¬â¢ve done.à An officer cannot take their crimes lightly but an officer must, to the best of their ability, treat them with respect.à Then, do your job, have a life outside of work, leave your job at the door and choose to be happy.à That may be the key.à Paul hopes it will be the key to his future happiness and the future happiness of his family. Generation Music
It is All the Same Thing If you are a teenager then you have heard that the music of today is trash and it will never compare to the music of the past. What makes our music so much worse? The songs are saying the exact same thing. What is the difference between music now and music then? As I listen to the music of the past, I notice that their way of presenting the music differs from music today. The way they used words were masks for what they were actually saying, but now artists say exactly what they mean.In Rick James's hit ââ¬Å"Mary Janeâ⬠, for example, he is talking about his excessive use of Marijuana. A person who has no knowledge of Marijuana would not know what Rick James was referring to when he said Mary Jane. He calls Mary Jane a she as if it were a real woman. He uses personification to express his passion for weed. ââ¬Å"I'm in love with Mary Jane. She's my main thing. She makes me feel alright. She makes my heart singâ⬠¦ Takes me to paradise. â⬠His o pening verse is all expressing his love for weed and how weed makes him feel.Wiz Khalifa is a rapper known for his weed obsession. In his song ââ¬Å"Upâ⬠, he Just comes right out and says that everything is better when you are high. He does not hide behind nicknames and descriptive words. Both songs agree that weed makes life better. Although both songs are equally bad influences, ââ¬Å"Mary Janeâ⬠would be better entitled than ââ¬Å"Upâ⬠. Betty Wright's song ââ¬Å"Slip and Do Itâ⬠is all about taking another woman's significant other. She says ââ¬Å"Girl, don't blame me for what I'm doin'. It's your man; he won't leave me alone! And it feels so good when you slip and do it. â⬠She is practically saying that cheating is not bad, and that women whose men cheat on them are at fault. The message is completely wrong, but the song was a hit. Her vocals and beat distract from the real message of her song. If an artist of todays time made a song even close to B etty Wright's song then it would be titled as trash. For example, Trey Songz's ââ¬Å"Cheat On Youâ⬠has never been a hit. Although Trey Songz is a talented artist, his music will somehow never mount to the music of the past.Trey Songz and Betty Wright messages are the same, but Betty Wright's song was a hit. Songs with the same messages, but different time periods are looked at differently. One is titled as award worthy, but the other has never gotten the attention it deserves. Time has changed, but messages in music have remained the same. The contrast between music of different time periods is hard to find. Music of the past and music of the present both present the same messages. The music Generation Music By shidahbee

How does the promotion strategy effect the customer purchase Dissertation
How does the promotion strategy effect the customer purchase - Dissertation Example This was a qualitative study based on primary data collection through questionnaire. The objectives of the study have been achieved. The study finds that advertising has a long-term orientation while other elements of the promotion mix, such as sales promotion, publicity and interactive promotions have an immediate impact resulting in consumer purchase. Sales promotion initiatives such as free offers and coupons tend to draw consumers instantly. Online marketing through social media platforms fetch tremendous publicity. These build awareness which, with further constant promotions can give rise to interest and desire to purchase the brand. Thus, promotions first create a brand perception on the minds of the consumers and then gradually turn them into consumers. However, there cannot be a set strategy applicable to all companies or products and services. The study concludes by highlighting the limitations and making recommendations for further research on the subject. Marketers usually build upon existing standard strategies adopted by others. However, standard strategy such as celebrity endorsement is no more sufficient to entice the customer. Consumers today can choose where, when and how they engage with a brand and they prefer to do so online (Launchfire Interactive, 2008). They respect innovative marketing programs that v alue their customers as partners, and that rewards them for their interest and engagement. This consumer demand and consumer consciousness has resulted in the emergence of a new marketing mix element ââ¬â interactive promotions. Launchfire Interactive cites of a study by Borrell Associates which forecast that expenditure on interactive promo

Learning Statement -this paper is for The Aboriginal Peoples of Canada Essay
Learning Statement -this paper is for The Aboriginal Peoples of Canada class ( First Nation course) - Essay Example Due to the interest that I had in the course and my eagerness to learn more, I always strived to grasp everything that was taught and to also study on my own so that I could be able to grasp everything I could possibly get. This allowed me to appreciate the traditional Canada and the manner it has transformed over the years. I developed a lot of interest in this course, right from the beginning, when the various topics that we were to study were introduced. The main reason as to why I had lots of interest in this course is due to the fact that it is a course that gave me an opportunity to understand Canada and the various historical aspects of the Canadian society. This was made possible through the studying of several topics that are associated to the antiquity of the Canadian society. Some of the topic that were studied in this course that were interesting included study of the original inhabitants of the land, settling of foreigners in Canada, emergence of conflicts among the traditional Canadian societies, the conflicts with the foreigners, mediation that led to the settling of the issues that had been raised and the reemergence of self-governance (Dickason & Newbigging, 2010). This course covered various aspects of the society that included human population issues, social cultural factors in Canada and the economic aspects of the traditional Canadian community and society. This is in addition to looking at the various systems that existed in the traditional Canadian society and the transformation of the society and the systems. The topic that best fascinated me in this class is the topic on the aboriginal healing movement. The major reason why this topic was so much of interest to me is due to the fact that it demonstrated how the conflict that had been experienced in the Canadian community was solved through reconciliation. This in turn transformed conflicts into peace and allowed various communities to live together. Aboriginal healing

Contemporary Art and Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Contemporary Art and Theory - Essay Example The essay "Contemporary Art and Theory" talks about Theory and Contemporary Art. It should be noted that contemporary art cannot be treated in isolation of the 1960-1970 period apparently due to the fact that this period alone excited much interest than any other art historical period. It was an era characterized by uncompromising critical artistic practices with leading figures like August Rodin, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso featuring very prominently. The period between 1960 to 1970 serves a significant purpose within the context of the discussion here fundamentally for a couple of reasons; it was within this period that the advent of the terms ââ¬Å"postmodernismâ⬠and ââ¬Å"modernismâ⬠made their debut imprint on the industry. Thus on this premise it can be said that this period served as the birth place of what we have today. In other words, the whole story began right there leading to what we have today. In addition, this period also provides a comprehensive time scale to facilitate the process of classifying the various artistic movements with particular relevance to their significance to our contemporary art. The usage of the term ââ¬Å"conceptâ⬠is said to have begun in the early 1960s, however the impact of it was heavily felt in the latter period of that decade with the advent of the works of people like Joseph Kossuth that opened the door for it to receive a concretized recognition as a movement. It is not widely now agreed that conceptual art is the precursor of conceptualism in contemporary art.
